Game Changers Technology Talk webinars are aimed at anyone who is interested in technical innovation in the nuclear industry, learning about cutting-edge research developments and understanding how the Game Changers programme helps solve challenges that can’t be met with off-the-shelf solutions.
June's session features the following talk:
Speakers: Tim Purdy (Director of Project Management, OVA Inc) and Emma Lutman (Project Manager, SNM Innovation Team, Sellafield Ltd)
This Tech Talk explores the development of StellarX, OVA’s AI-powered VR/MR training platform, and its potential to transform training for high-hazard operations across the nuclear sector. Developed in collaboration with Sellafield Ltd’s Special Nuclear Materials through the Game Changers programme, the project investigates how immersive simulation could improve operator preparedness, enhance safety, and reduce the challenges associated with traditional training methods.
The session provides an overview of the operational and technical drivers behind the project, including the need for realistic, repeatable training environments that allow personnel to practise complex procedures without exposure to operational hazards. Particular focus is given to the platform’s no-code capabilities, which enable training scenarios to be created and modified without specialist programming expertise, supporting greater flexibility and long-term adaptability.
Attendees heard about the project’s progression from concept through development to a successful live demonstration at Sellafield’s Engineering Centre of Excellence. The demonstration showcased how immersive virtual environments can replicate complex operational settings, allowing users to experience and interact with realistic training scenarios while stakeholders observed the activity in real time.
Tim and Emma also reflected on the wider implications of immersive training technologies for Sellafield and the nuclear industry, including opportunities to scale the platform across additional use cases, sites, and teams.
