February's session featured the following talk:
REACH
The development of the REACH modular robotic manipulator for long-range deployment of equipment in hard-to-reach, contaminated areas was discussed by James Hill from Eadon Consulting and challenge owners Darren Hockaday and Nic Clarke from Sellafield Ltd.
REACH is a modular robotic manipulator deployable in hard-to-reach, contaminated areas that are inaccessible to people. It is capable of deploying a variety of sensors and tools and is being developed to have a payload capacity of up to 25kg.
The project has completed a Game Changers proof-of-concept project and is now being developed for an active deployment towards the end of the year on the Sellafield site. It will deploy a radiometric payload into a cell whilst navigating around existing cell structures.
Eadon Consulting create engineering solutions for challenging environments, from idea generation through to detailed design. REACH is one of several technologies currently being developed.
