Game Changers Technology Talk webinars are aimed at anyone interested in technical innovation in the nuclear industry. Learn about cutting-edge research developments and discover how the Game Changers programme helps solve challenges that can’t be met with off-the-shelf solutions.
June’s session featured the following talk:
The development and deployment of a revolutionary prototype disposable modular snake manipulator was discussed by challenge owner Jason Simpson, Project Manager at Dounreay, and Dr Xin ‘Erwin’ Dong, Associate Professor in Engineering Design For Manufacturing at the University of Nottingham.
The snake robot, designed to access confined spaces with narrow entries in the nuclear sector, is the culmination of more than 15 years of research and development by Dr Xin Dong and his team. Using a modular method to rapidly build ultra-long and slender snake manipulators, an 8m-long, 25mm-diameter snake robot was recently deployed in an active survey demonstration in a shielded cell at Nuclear Restoration Services Dounreay, with extremely promising results.
