Game Changers Technology Talk webinars are aimed at anyone interested in technical innovation in the nuclear industry. Learn about cutting-edge research developments and discover how the Game Changers programme helps solve challenges that can’t be met with off-the-shelf solutions.
This month's session featured the following talk:
The challenge of and solution for monitoring waste containers within the Interim Storage Facilities (ISF) at Sellafield was discussed by Callum Brierly, Senior Research Technologist at Sellafield Ltd, and Farzana Zainal Abidin, Robotics Engineer at Jacobs.
A variety of radioactive material is stored in Self-Shielded Boxes (SSBs) within the Interim Storage Facility (ISF) at Sellafield, potentially for up to 100 years. The SSBs need to be periodically inspected to ensure the condition of the packages. Rather than moving the boxes for inspection, Jacobs has developed a prototype crane-deployed robot to gather data in-situ, with funding and support from the Game Changers innovation programme.
The Waste Container Inspection Robot has the ability to fit in the canyons between stacks of boxes and in between boxes in a given stack, allowing a range of sensors or cameras to be deployed and feedback information.
