Dublin-based company PRAM (Predictive Resilient Asset Monitoring) recently showcased their groundbreaking radar technology, proving the efficacy of a promising solution to the challenges of condition monitoring. The demonstration, held in Dublin, was part of a Game Changers-funded proof of concept study focused on the long-term monitoring of air ducts, a critical component of Sellafield's infrastructure.
The original challenge, launched back in 2022, was to explore long-term sensor solutions which will allow Sellafield Ltd to remotely monitor the condition inside ducts in storage facilities. The inactive demonstration highlighted the capabilities of PRAM's 3D-mm radar system in detecting corrosion and changes within ductwork systems, by closely simulating the conditions found on the Sellafield site.
PRAM's technology is remarkable for its adaptability and comprehensive monitoring capabilities. The unit can be easily fixed to the exterior of ductwork using magnets with the sensor arm installed through existing inspection ducts across the Sellafield site, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. The radar can then access hard-to-reach areas, detecting changes even around corners and at right angles.
In addition to the proprietary radar solution developed by PRAM, the device will incorporate temperature, humidity, and noise sensors, allowing a wide range of potential system failures to be detected, providing Sellafield with invaluable insights into the condition of their ventilation infrastructure.
With many miles of ventilation across the Sellafield site, this technology promises to revolutionise monitoring processes, offering real-time condition reports that will enable informed decision-making, and ensuring safety and reduction of operating costs over extended periods of time.
Founder of PRAM, Stephen McNulty, said “We've created a product which we intend to be deployed permanently into ventilation systems in the nuclear and wider power generation sector. The core innovation here is the ability to map, monitor and quantify corrosion levels. From the data generated, our AI will predict when ventilation systems become corroded, allowing remedial action to be taken long before system integrity becomes compromised. From the perspective of a small company, it's great to understand a challenge that an end-user has and imagine how our technology can solve those issues. The Game Changers programme facilitates that.”
Having proven the core radar technology, ongoing collaboration between PRAM and Sellafield Ltd will help shape the future product strategy and direction. Discussions are now underway regarding a trial onsite at Sellafield.
