Industrial cleaning experts ProDecon have been awarded further funding to develop their vapour phase decontamination technology for nuclear industry post operational clean out (POCO).
The POCO challenge presented by Sellafield Ltd, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd and Game Changers called for technology to support access, characterisation, decontamination, and waste transfer and treatment. ProDecon’s proposal to explore the application of specialist petrochemical decontamination expertise in the nuclear industry was one of five applications to be awarded feasibility funding in response to the challenge. ProDecon’s technology has now been recognised as having the potential for further development at proof of concept stage.
Using a proprietary blend of chemicals designed for use in the vapour phase, ProDecon’s technology enables the removal of hydrocarbons and other residues from pipes and vessels to a greater extent than using steam alone. The focus of their latest Game Changers-funded project will be to assess the main differences in configuration and requirements of the nuclear industry in comparison to oil and gas. Future work will also consider how to resolve any access constraints, and the execution and integrity of the cleaning procedure using regular monitoring to achieve increased quality and efficiency.
The project is expected to conclude early next year, culminating in an inactive demonstration of the adapted technology/process.
